It sounds like a good idea to run a DISM and SFC scan to fix any system issues. Sometimes these scans can help resolve problems like the one you're experiencing.
I tried just restarting instead of a full shutdown on my third attempt, and it worked! Windows managed to process the update, which had been stuck. It was a security update that asked for another restart to complete successfully. After that, my PC booted up just fine, with no black screen at all. I think it was definitely the stuck update causing the issue!
