Why is my PC’s memory usage so high when I’m just watching videos?

I'm experiencing extremely high memory usage on my new PC, sitting at around 97% even though I'm just watching videos on Chrome. I have four tabs open, with one in a smaller window over the larger one. Additionally, Discord and a few background apps are running. My specs include Windows 11, an RTX 5090, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 64GB of DDR5 RAM. I've also noticed some really odd behavior: my monitors flicker to black randomly, apps glitch out, and sometimes Chrome runs out of memory altogether. I've updated all my drivers and haven't had any issues until recently. What could be causing these problems?

Chrome is notorious for using up a lot of memory, and having Discord and Steam open can add to that. It doesn't add up though – with 64GB total RAM, your usage shouldn't be this high with just those apps. Have you tried rebooting your computer and checking the memory usage after that? Start without opening anything extra and see how it behaves.

I agree, rebooting would help figure out if it’s related to a specific app or just the system itself. It’s also good to monitor usage right after rebooting.

Yeah, make sure nothing suspicious is running in the background. Sometimes, apps can hog resources without you realizing it.

Try ending tasks on your running apps one at a time and see how much memory is freed. This should help you pinpoint which application is soaking up the memory.

That’s a solid tip! It's a direct way to see what's causing the high usage without much hassle.

Yeah, also check for any background processes you aren’t aware of using Task Manager, it could reveal some surprises!

It sounds like you might be facing a Windows 11 optimization issue along with Chrome sucking up resources. Windows 11 can be a bit bloated, so consider cleaning up your startup apps or switching browsers. Firefox with uBlock Origin is a better alternative to reduce some ad-heavy load. That might help ease the memory strain!

Have you checked if any of your apps have updates pending? Sometimes, older versions can lead to memory leaks. And also, if you suspect that someone else is using your PC, check your user management settings to see if any unauthorized accounts are logged in.
