Why Is My 960 GB SSD Only Showing 83 GB Usable Space?

I've got a Kingston SSD that claims to be 960 GB, but I'm only able to use 83 GB. The drive shows up as 937 GB, but once I go over the 83 GB mark, it becomes unresponsive and hits 100% activity with no read/write happening. I've ruled out errors, formatted it several times, and even tried switching between NTFS and FAT32, as well as MBR and GPT. I've checked the firmware, but nothing seems to fix the issue. I'm really confused, and I could use some help figuring out how to access the rest of that space. Anyone have any ideas?

Seriously, if it checks out as 937 GB, it's not legit. 960 GB drives usually have less usable space, around 894 GB, not more. That’s a huge red flag that it’s fake. You might want to consider getting in touch with Kingston to see what they say about it before trying anything drastic.

Sounds like you might have a fake SSD. These things can sometimes claim to be larger than they really are. It's annoying but not uncommon, especially when buying from sketchy sources.

Ugh, that's disappointing. I bought mine from Facebook Marketplace too. Now I'm worried!

Ditto on the fake drive suspicions. I would suggest looking into your warranty options. Sometimes you can get replacements if you’ve been scammed. Also, maybe don’t buy from Facebook again? Stick to known retailers for SSDs!

You should definitely check the partitions. Download Minitool Partition Wizard to see if there’s any unallocated space or if the partition looks off. Sometimes, a hidden partition might suck up all the space.

I already checked, and there's just one partition of 937 GB. No unallocated space!

If your tools show all is good but you’re still having issues, I’d recommend testing with H2Testw. It writes to every part of the drive to verify if it's actually what it claims to be. It could take a while, but it's the best way to really confirm how much space you have.
