What Should I Know Before Flashing My BIOS?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded my PC with a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Luckily, everything started up without any issues. I'm using my old M.2 SSD, thinking it would keep my Windows and applications intact. However, I ran into a problem when I couldn't log in because I needed to reset my PIN, but I required internet access to do that. It turns out my PC doesn't recognize Ethernet, and after some troubleshooting, it seems I need to flash my BIOS to enable the necessary drivers for internet access. Unfortunately, when I tried to access my BIOS from the boot menu, I received an error message. I'm planning to buy a flash drive to download the BIOS from another computer tomorrow. Before I proceed, I'd like to know if there are any potential pitfalls I should watch out for during this process. I've heard that flashing the BIOS incorrectly could brick my motherboard, which I'd really like to avoid!

Flashing your BIOS can definitely feel intimidating, but it's a process that many people do successfully every day! Just read all the instructions closely. It’s unlikely you’ll brick your motherboard just from one misstep; usually, if something goes wrong, it just won’t work, rather than causing lasting damage. And remember, keep your hands off the power button until the process is completely finished. Most modern motherboards will revert to the last stable BIOS if something goes awry, but power loss during the update could be a different story. Just stay calm and follow the steps! Good luck with it!

Make sure you check what kind of file format is needed for your motherboard's BIOS flash. Some boards, like my old Asrock, had specific naming conventions for the BIOS file. Since you're working with an MSI Pro Z790-P WiFi, just double-check their support page for the exact instructions and requirements. It’ll save you a lot of headaches during the process!
