What’s the Best AM4 CPU Upgrade for My RX 9070 XT at 1440p?

Hey folks! I'm planning to upgrade my CPU to get the best performance out of my RX 9070 XT when gaming at 1440p. Right now, I'm on an AM4 setup and I'd like to stick with it to avoid the high costs associated with moving to AM5, especially since RAM prices are pretty inflated.

Here's what I'm working with:
- Current CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
- GPU: GIGABYTE AORUS Radeon RX 9070 XT ELITE
- Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS WIFI
- RAM: 20 GB (16 GB + 4 GB) DDR4 3200MHz
- Cooler: DeepCool AK620 Digital SE
- Resolution: 2560x1440 (QHD)

I'm concerned that my RAM setup and the PCIe 3.0 on my A520 motherboard might hold back any new CPU I choose. The X3D processors are scarce where I live, but if they're worth it, I might overpay a bit. Should I go with a Ryzen 7 5700X or 5900X? Or should I just stick with my Ryzen 5 5500 and wait for better options down the line? Any advice on minimizing bottlenecking without breaking the bank would be appreciated!

If you're looking for the best performance, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D really shines, but it does come at a steep price. The Ryzen 7 5700X is a solid upgrade over your 5500, offering better architecture and additional cores. You might see a16-30% improvement in performance, depending on your games. However, your RAM situation should ideally be improved for optimal results, even though I get that RAM prices are a headache right now.

Don't stress too much about PCIe 3.0. It shouldn't impact your gaming experience significantly. If you're lucky enough to find X3D processors priced near MSRP, they could be worth it, otherwise, the 5800X or 5800XT are great choices. Also, you really might want to upgrade that 4GB RAM stick to match with another 16GB stick for a total of 32GB. It'll help a ton!

Totally agree, matching RAM is really important, especially for AMD systems!

Going for the 5700X or 5800X3D is the best move for your setup at 1440p. Your GPU will still be doing most of the heavy lifting, but these CPUs will reduce any potential bottlenecks in CPU-intensive games. Aim for a matched dual-channel RAM setup to really get the best performance when you do upgrade your CPU.

Honestly, it all comes down to what you consider a reasonable price. For gaming on AM4, the 5600X or 5700X3D are the main options I'd recommend, especially if you don't want to spend too much. Just make sure to balance your expectations with your budget. If you can find the 5700X3D at a decent price, go for it!
