I'm trying to upgrade the storage in my old ThinkPad T520, and I noticed that the internal SATA SSDs are more expensive per gigabyte than secondhand external USB SSDs. I really don't want to carry around an external drive, though! I've thought about a few ways to connect an external USB SSD or hard drive directly to the internal SATA port, like cannibalizing a USB port or using a SATA male to USB female adapter, but I'm not sure if that would actually work. Is there a feasible way to link an external USB SSD or hard drive to the internal SATA port? Any advice would be appreciated, especially since SSD prices are so high right now due to demand.

You could consider shucking a portable HDD! It's a common practice, and inside most external hard drives, you'll find a traditional spinning hard disk with a SATA interface. Just take apart the outer casing, and you should be able to access it easily.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into shucking a drive; sounds like a more affordable way to increase my storage.
