Looking for Recommendations on Upgrading to AM4 with a Ryzen 7

Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading from my aging i7-7700K. I've got 32GB of 3200MHz DDR4 RAM, and I'm using a GTX 1080 that I plan to keep for now since I can't swing a new GPU. My budget for this upgrade is around $450. I'm eyeing the Ryzen 7 5800XT at about $290, but I also need to choose a new motherboard. What should I be looking for in an AM4 board, and is the 5800XT a solid choice?

If you’re keeping your GPU and other components, I suggest going for a B550 motherboard. I've had good experiences with ASRock and MSI. As for cooling, I use a Thermalright Phantom Evo air cooler to keep my system cool, which works really well. For your CPU, anything above the 5600X would be a good fit. Just keep your total upgrade costs in mind: around $370 to $450 should get you set up nicely. Also, if the CPU comes with a stock cooler or you already have one, you can save some money there.

I’ve been using the X570 Tomahawk since 2020 and have been really satisfied with it! It's held up well for my needs, especially considering the rise in DDR5 prices, I don't feel the need to switch to the AM5 platform yet.

Honestly, I would suggest looking at a B760 DDR4 motherboard paired with a 13th or 14th Gen i5 or i7. You'd likely end up under budget and get a better CPU than the 5800X. A 14700 model really outperforms the 5800X. You could even get the i5 14600KF to save a hundred bucks and still build a great system!
