Is Buying a Single 16GB RAM Stick a Good Idea?

I'm considering purchasing a single 16GB RAM stick now and plan to buy another one next month to reach a total of 32GB. I've heard some concerns about potential issues related to performance and compatibility. Is it okay to go ahead with just one stick for now, or would it be better to wait and buy a matched set later?

It's a decent plan to get one stick now if you're planning to upgrade soon. Just be aware that using one stick won't perform as well as dual-channel setups, and there's a minor risk that the sticks might not work seamlessly together later. If I were you, I'd try to buy used RAM to save on costs.

Having a single stick of RAM is fine, but it's worth noting that you might miss out on some performance benefits that come with dual-channel configurations. If it's DDR4, you'll be okay, but if it's DDR5, the impact on performance isn't as significant. Just keep in mind that when you do upgrade, it's best to get the same exact stick for compatibility reasons.

In general, it’s better to buy RAM in pairs because they are tested together for compatibility. You might run into issues later on if you add a second stick that doesn't quite match the first one. But if you need RAM now, just ensure that both sticks are the same frequency and try to match the timings as closely as possible.

It's better to wait for a matched set instead of getting just one stick. While you can use single-channel RAM, it won't be optimal for gaming or heavy tasks. Plus, current prices are pretty high, so hunting for a used 2x16GB set might be a smarter move.
