How can I safely clean thermal paste off my CPU pins?

I was trying to reseat my CPU because my computer wouldn't boot, and I accidentally got some thermal paste on the CPU pins. I've managed to remove most of it with a toothpick, but there's still some residue stuck between the pins. What's the best way to clean thermal paste off CPU pins without causing any damage?

Most thermal pastes are non-conductive, so a little bit shouldn't cause any permanent damage. Still, it’s best to clean it to prevent any contact problems. I recommend using 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol for the safest and most effective cleaning.

And remember to let the alcohol dry completely before powering it on!

You can pour 99% isopropyl alcohol over the area or even soak the CPU in it for a minute or two. It helps break down the thermal paste, and you can rinse it off with more alcohol. Just ensure it dries before you use the CPU again—should take less than a few minutes.

Quick question: can you safely submerge a CPU in isopropyl alcohol? Just wondering.

Yeah, soaking it in alcohol should be fine for a short time; it evaporates quickly and won't hurt the CPU.

Here's a video that might help ease your worries about it: [Watch this](https://youtu.be/t52UW5bXkbs?si=xnW-KEsDphRexfpy&t=61)! I found it really reassuring when I was in a similar situation.

In case you're looking for a more hands-on approach, try using isopropyl alcohol and a soft toothbrush. That’s what I’ve seen in a tutorial by JayzTwoCents!

Thermal paste is usually non-conductive, and it might not do any harm as long as it’s not liquid metal. I once had a CPU with some paste stuck between pins and it worked fine after I left it alone. Just be careful not to mess with the pins too much while cleaning.
