How Can I Remove School Administration from My Mac?

I recently started university, and I just realized that my old school still has administration access on my Mac. Everything I saved back in high school is stored under the school's admin account, which has a home folder named "cho0067"—my old student code. I visited the school, but they told me that since I didn't address this sooner, I have to reset my Mac completely to regain access. This means I'd lose all my files. Additionally, my Google account shows that it's still managed by the school, and I can't delete this monitoring. Even in my settings, I see the old school email instead of my personal one, and I can't change it. Is there a way to remove their administration from my device without losing all my data?

Unfortunately, it sounds like they need to remove their admin privileges themselves. If they aren't willing to do it, your options are pretty limited. You could try to reach out to someone higher up at the school or ask for a formal release of your device.

They mentioned that they won’t help at all, though. Maybe you could try to explain your situation better to them or get a parent to help negotiate?

I feel for you! One potential workaround is to consider backing up your files to an external drive before attempting a reset. That way, if you have to go that route, you won’t lose everything.

Schools typically shouldn't retain admin rights on devices they don't own. You might be able to reach out to Apple Support; they can sometimes help remove profiles if the school is being uncooperative. It's worth giving them a shot before wiping everything!

That’s a good idea! I’ll try contacting Apple and see what they can do.
