I'm currently working as an IT Support Specialist at a small to medium company, and I've been here for about four months. This is my first job in IT, so I'm still learning the ropes. Recently, I got my first write-up, and I'm unsure if this is a valuable learning experience or a sign to look for a new job. The incident involved me trying to connect an old thermostat to Wi-Fi. I informed my boss that the model didn't support Wi-Fi, and while I did make a minor mistake initially, I corrected it and let him know it was resolved. However, the next day, instead of feedback or guidance, I received a write-up for 'lack of communication.' My manager has been providing little training or support since day one, and the atmosphere feels uncomfortable. I'm frustrated and concerned about whether this is the type of environment I want to be in, especially as I'm also pursuing a degree in cybersecurity.

I get that it's frustrating, but try to document everything clearly from now on. If you decide to stay, make sure any tasks or corrections are noted down in writing. But honestly, I'd be looking for something else if I were you.
Honestly, if they're writing you up for something so petty, it probably won't get any better. I think you should start looking for other opportunities where your skills will be appreciated.
This sounds really toxic. If you're feeling uncomfortable already, make your job search a priority. There's a lot of companies out there that appreciate and train their employees well.
There might be more going on behind the scenes. It sounds like the expectations weren't clearly communicated to you. If that's the case, they might be trying to force you out or just have poor management. Definitely keep an eye out for new jobs.
I had a similar experience where management wrote me up for a minor issue. It's usually a sign that they want to create a paper trail before dismissing you. I'd say start applying for new positions.
