Is my external hard drive dead or is it just the controller?

I have an old Samsung D3 Station external hard drive that suddenly stopped working. Just before it died, I downloaded a mod for a game, and afterward, it started acting really strange. Sometimes when I plug it in, it shows up on my laptop but says 'Not responding.' Other times, it connects and shows my files, but then it freezes after I click on something, eventually disconnecting. It used to work normally, but now it disconnects immediately without showing up in Windows or Device Manager anymore. I've also tried using a different laptop and a new USB cable, but nothing changed. Recently, I noticed a burn mark on the board after taking it out of the enclosure. Could a new enclosure or SATA cable fix this, or is my hard drive toast?

Even a small burn mark can indicate serious issues. If the drive is showing those symptoms, it’s possible it might just be failing. When your new cable arrives, give it a try and see if it helps. Just keep your expectations realistic; sometimes drives just go bad out of nowhere.

It sounds like your hard drive might be fried, especially with that burn mark on the board. What you could do is connect the bare drive directly using a SATA to USB adapter. If the actual drive isn't damaged, you might still be able to recover your data.
