Should I Reinstall Windows on My New Lenovo Laptop Due to Possible Package Damage?

I just received a new Lenovo laptop, but I'm a bit anxious because the package had some damage when it arrived. It was delayed by a day due to shipping issues, and when it finally got here, it was pouring rain. I signed for it quickly and didn't notice that the box had some rips on the ends. From what I can tell, the laptop seems untouched, but I'm worried someone might have accessed it. Do you think I should reinstall Windows from a USB for peace of mind, or am I just being overly cautious? Should I contact Lenovo, or just let it be?

Honestly, I think you're probably fine! It's common for these packages to get a bit beat up during delivery.

You really need the original drivers for your new laptop, so don't just wipe it clean and reimage. Instead, install the factory image or else you might end up spending ages looking for the drivers for all the components.

That makes sense! I was only thinking of reinstalling Windows and not entirely reimaging the laptop.

Totally agree, especially with Windows 11! Most of the time it will find all the drivers automatically, except maybe the network one. If there are any issues, the motherboard manufacturer's website is the best place to get updated drivers.

Just to be cautious, Lenovo’s security reputation isn't the best. Considering where the company is based, I’d recommend returning it and looking for something like an HP Elitebook instead.

Honestly, every time you buy a new computer from manufacturers like Lenovo, it’s a good idea to do a clean install of Windows. This is because they usually preload a lot of bloatware you’ll never use. So yes, go ahead and reinstall from scratch, not just from concern about previous users, but to get rid of all the unnecessary stuff they packed in there.

Just to clarify, doing that involves creating a bootable Windows USB drive with the media creation tool and booting from it, right?

Minor damage to the box happens quite a lot, especially with shipping delays and bad weather. As long as the laptop's seals and accessories look untouched, you’re probably good to go. For assurance, consider reinstalling Windows from Lenovo’s official recovery image and check the BIOS for anything odd. Only reach out to Lenovo if you see missing seals or strange software already installed on the device.

Thanks for the insight! When you say ‘internal seals,’ are you talking about something inside the laptop, or just what’s visible in the box? It felt secure in a material with a sticker, which seemed intact.
