How can I land a job as a Linux administrator?

I've been trying to break into the field of systems administration as a junior admin but am having a tough time. I have my RHCSA certification and will graduate with an associate's degree in network and systems administration this March. Unfortunately, my job history isn't the best, which I know might be holding me back. Most job listings I find, even for junior positions, seem to ask for senior-level experience or 5+ years in the field. I'm also facing challenges finding specific Linux admin roles. What steps can I take to successfully enter this field?

With your RHCSA, you should have a good shot at landing a junior position! My suggestion would be to gain some experience, even if it's in service desk roles, as that can eventually help you transition to a Linux admin role. If you haven't already, definitely check out entry-level positions related to tech support or any roles that give you hands-on experience.

I actually have a decade of experience on the service desk, but I have some gaps in my work history. I’m concerned that's affecting my chances. Do you have any tips on where to look for jobs?

It seems like becoming a Linux admin as a standalone role is getting rare. A lot of positions are now focused on cloud roles, like platform engineering or DevOps. Make sure to check out those areas since Linux knowledge is becoming a fundamental skill there.

Don't underestimate the power of your personal projects or home lab setups. Highlight what you've done with your server at home or any personal projects you've undertaken. Employers often love to see practical experience, so talk about those when you're interviewing!
