I'm having a frustrating issue with my older Acer laptop. It freezes on a black screen whenever an SSD that has a corrupted OS is connected during boot-up. To troubleshoot, I've opened up the laptop to reset the CMOS and the battery in hopes of clearing the motherboard's state.
Here's my plan moving forward:
1. First, I'll disconnect the SSD.
2. Then, I'll boot from a Live Linux Mint USB using the F12 Boot Manager.
3. Once I'm in the menu, I plan to reconnect the SSD.
4. I'll try to select the USB to start Mint, with the hope that the SSD will be accessible for recovery or formatting without causing that dreadful POST freeze.
A few concerns I have:
- I only have one working port, and HDMI doesn't display anything when I connect it during the freeze.
- I'm worried that the BIOS might not recognize the new SATA/NVMe device once I've opened the Boot Manager.
I've got a few questions:
1. Has anyone successfully used the hot-plug method on older Acer hardware?
2. Should I wait to plug the SSD in until I'm fully booted into the Linux Mint environment?
3. Is there a real risk of damaging the controller if I hot-plug a SATA/NVMe drive on older boards?
Any advice or warnings would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't recommend hot-swapping unless your motherboard specifically supports it. There's a chance you could damage something, and that risk might not be worth it. If possible, try booting the SSD on another PC to determine if the issue is with the laptop or the SSD itself.
Honestly, just grab a $15 USB adapter for the SSD. You can plug it in after booting up the live disk, which is safer than messing around with hot-swapping. It’s a small investment that could save your motherboard!
I understand the concern about hot-swapping. The issue with my Acer is a known BIOS bug where it hangs the moment it detects this corrupted SSD. Since I can’t even access the BIOS with the SSD connected, I’m considering the hot-plug as a last resort to hopefully recover the drive without permanently breaking the laptop.
