Why Is There a Mysterious .txt File on My New SATA Drive?

I recently got a SATA drive from a friend and formatted it for use. While installing a game on this drive, I discovered a random .txt file called RichTapCore.log. I couldn't find any information about it, but from my research, it seems linked to some haptic software, which is strange because I haven't installed anything related to that on my PC. I can't even find anything related to it in Task Manager, Windows tools, or the add/remove programs feature. Can anyone help me figure this out?

If you want a clean slate, you could format the drive again. Use Command Prompt as an admin to clean the drive completely. This process should remove everything, including that mysterious .txt file.

It could be that some games automatically write log files on new drives. Check if the game you installed is known to use specific software that might include this RichTapCore.log. If you can't find anything in your installed programs or Task Manager, it may just be a leftover from your game installation.

I understand, but I couldn’t find anything relevant in Task Manager or through other tools. Any tips on how to look for SDKs in my games?

Since you formatted the drive, it seems likely this file originated from the game you were installing. Maybe just format the drive again and see if that resolves the issue. Sometimes random files slip through during installations.

Weird stuff can happen with new drives. Sometimes Windows or games create temporary files on the emptiest drive. Have you checked the installed games for any commonalities? It might give you a clue as to where that log file came from.
