Am I Bottlenecking My PC? Thoughts on Upgrading to NVMe Storage

I had a late-night tech epiphany while scrolling through specs and realized that, despite my decent PC build (Ryzen 5, 32GB RAM, RTX 3060) that I set up about eight months ago, I completely overlooked my storage setup. I've been using a SATA SSD for my OS while my motherboard has an unused NVMe slot. Now I'm questioning if I'm misusing my powerful components by relying on subpar storage. Is this common? If I switch my OS to an NVMe drive, will I see a significant real-world performance boost? Am I overthinking this or is this a legit concern?

Most games don't utilize NVMe speeds, so you probably won't notice much difference. In a blind test, distinguishing between a high-end NVMe and a SATA SSD would likely be difficult, especially for gaming. If you're worried, just add an NVMe drive later if you want to play one of the few games that need it.

The real-world difference in performance isn't drastic unless you're dealing with huge files. For regular use, you might not notice a big jump unless your SATA is particularly slow. If your workloads involve heavy data transfer, NVMe will shine, but if not, stick with what you have for now.

It's not worth stressing over storage if you're already on SSD; the biggest performance impact is more notable when switching from HDD to SSD. If you need a boost, focus on your RAM, not just the SSD.

It really depends on your current SSD. If it's a high-quality one, the difference might be subtle. However, moving to NVMe for your OS could make things feel a bit snappier. Overall, though, you're likely overthinking it; the performance gap isn’t huge for everyday tasks or general gaming.
