Should I Upgrade My CPU and Motherboard for Better Gaming Performance?

I'm currently using an i5-14400F with a 5070 GPU on a B760 motherboard. While gaming on my 2K monitor, my GPU usage barely reaches 50%, and my CPU is often stuck at a maximum of 3.8 GHz, which I feel is limiting my performance. I'm getting about 165-180 FPS, but I want to push for 240 FPS. I'm considering upgrading to a Z motherboard and possibly switching to a stronger Intel or AMD CPU. Is this the right move?

What games are you playing? Also, make sure you don't have any Vsync or FPS limiters on. That can affect your FPS since you’re on a 240Hz monitor.

I’ve disabled Vsync on all my games, including Apex Legends, Rainbow Six, and League of Legends.

Before you decide to upgrade, what's your goal? If you’re just looking for more FPS, make sure your current setup isn’t bottlenecking your performance. Do you actually have any issues, or is it more about expectations?

My goal is to reach 240 FPS since I'm gaming on a 2K 240Hz monitor. I noticed my GPU isn't really utilized, and my CPU isn't hitting its max speed when I game.

It sounds like you definitely have a CPU bottleneck if your performance feels stuttery in certain games. It may not be necessary to upgrade the motherboard unless you're experiencing voltage issues or throttling due to poor cooling. Look into a stronger cooler first and see if that helps.

Right? My CPU can hit higher speeds outside games, but it stays at 3.8 GHz while gaming. I’ll try adjusting settings and maybe upgrade the cooler before committing to a full motherboard and CPU change.

Upgrading just the motherboard won’t necessarily boost your performance unless the current one is throttling due to VRM issues. If you’ve got a decent budget, sure, go for it! Being able to say you upgraded is always nice.

Yeah, I think the CPU upgrade is what I need first. I’ve read that moving from a B-class to a Z-class motherboard would help if I do decide to switch to a more powerful CPU. Should I stick with Intel or switch to AMD?

The B760 supports boost speeds, but you might be limited by the stock cooler that comes with the i5-14400F. That cooler only works well at lower power. If you want your CPU to hit higher speeds, consider getting a better cooler rated for at least 150W. That could really help with your performance issues.

Got it! So if I get a better cooler, it might fix the clock speed issue? I’ve been having throttling warnings even when trying to boost it.
