I want to use two monitors as separate extended displays with my laptop, not mirror the same image on both. The laptop has only one HDMI port, and its USB-C port supports data transfer only rather than video output. I've found HDMI extenders that include USB-C or USB-A cables, but I'm not sure what type of adapter or docking solution will actually work.

An HDMI splitter or HDMI switch generally won’t give you two independent screens. A splitter normally mirrors one source to both monitors, while a switch selects between sources. For an extended desktop, you need a second graphics output, such as a DisplayLink USB adapter or a compatible docking station.
If your laptop supports video over USB-C, a USB-C dock or USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable could provide the second monitor connection. However, USB-C ports vary, so confirm that the port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or another video-output standard before buying. A data-only USB-C port will not work with a basic hub or cable.
A regular HDMI extender only increases the distance between a source and a display; it won’t create another independent video output. Since your USB-C port doesn’t support video, a USB-C hub probably won’t work. Look for a USB-A-to-HDMI adapter or docking station that uses DisplayLink, which functions as an additional video adapter. Check that it supports an extended desktop and your desired resolution.
A docking station can be a clean solution, but make sure it specifically supports your laptop and extended displays. If the laptop has only one HDMI output and no USB-C video support, choose a dock with DisplayLink or another USB graphics technology rather than a passive HDMI hub.
I had the same issue with a USB-C hub because my laptop’s USB-C port was data-only. A DisplayLink adapter connected through USB-A is the type to look for instead.
