Is Ubuntu Unity a Good Choice for a First Linux Desktop?

I've been comparing Linux distributions to find one I can use for learning Linux and as a daily driver. Most of the recommendations I've seen are Debian-based, so Ubuntu seemed like a sensible starting point because it has lots of documentation and community support.

However, the default GNOME desktop seems a little demanding for my older computer, which still runs from a hard drive. I'm considering Ubuntu Unity because it feels lighter and has Ubuntu's classic desktop interface. I tried it briefly and liked how it looked and felt.

Would Ubuntu Unity be a reasonable choice for someone new to Linux, or would I be better off using a more established desktop such as Xfce, Cinnamon, KDE, or GNOME?

GNOME isn’t automatically too heavy for every machine, so it’s worth testing rather than assuming. That said, if the computer is older and you’re still using a hard drive, a lighter desktop such as Xfce may feel more responsive. An SSD upgrade would likely make an even bigger difference than changing desktops.

That makes sense. The system is fairly old, so responsiveness is my main concern, but I’ll compare Unity and Xfce before deciding.

Unity has some distinctive features, including the HUD and Compiz effects, and it can be enjoyable if that style suits you. The tradeoff is that it has a few bugs and a smaller user base. Your choice should also depend on what you plan to do with the system.
