Should I replace my failing i9-14900K or switch platforms?

My i9-14900K system has become increasingly unstable even after BIOS microcode updates and reinstalling Windows. Downloads and application installers report corrupted files, Firefox and WhatsApp crash, and programs such as 3ds Max, Photoshop, Unreal Engine, and rendering workloads frequently close or fail. Replacing the Windows SSD did not help, but undervolting the CPU temporarily made the system stable enough to install software, which makes me suspect CPU degradation.

The system has an RTX 4070 Ti, 128GB of Kingston Fury RAM using two 64GB kits, a Corsair 850i power supply, five SSDs, and two hard drives. The memory is running at 4000 MT/s because both kits would not remain stable with XMP enabled. I also tested different RAM configurations, storage, and another power supply without resolving the problem.

Should I pursue a warranty replacement for another 14900K, or move to AMD or another platform despite the added cost of a new motherboard and possible RAM compatibility issues? This PC is used heavily for rendering, so reliability matters more to me than getting the absolute highest benchmark score.

If you decide to change platforms, AMD could be a good fit for a rendering workstation and may run cooler and more reliably, but the motherboard cost is unavoidable. Depending on whether your memory is DDR4 or DDR5, you might be able to reuse the RAM. A lower-tier Intel chip such as a 14700K is another option if you want to keep the current board, though a replacement 14900K through warranty makes more financial sense first.

Your memory configuration is still worth keeping in mind. Running two separate kits at 128GB can stress the memory controller, and 4000 MT/s may not be stable depending on whether it is DDR4 or DDR5. However, since you tested different kits, single sticks, XMP on and off, storage, and another power supply, the CPU is a reasonable suspect. A warranty replacement is the least expensive first step.

Start with the warranty process. Intel extended coverage for affected 13th- and 14th-generation desktop CPUs, so a 14900K may have up to five years of coverage depending on the purchase and region. The seller may require testing or service first, but it is still worth pursuing. Also check whether your motherboard has the latest BIOS available, including any final beta release.

For this kind of workload, reliability is more important than chasing the fastest specifications. If the replacement CPU also gives trouble, then consider a platform designed around heavier sustained workloads, such as a high-core-count AMD system or Threadripper, but that is a much larger budget increase.

If the processor degraded before the BIOS fixes were applied, a microcode update cannot reverse that damage. Undervolting can reduce instability, but it does not repair a degraded chip. If you receive a replacement, update the BIOS immediately and use the board's recommended Intel default power settings rather than aggressive motherboard presets.
