I'm trying to connect an older VHS/DVD combo player to a modern TV. I connected the red, white, and yellow AV cables from the player to an AV-to-HDMI converter, then ran an HDMI cable from the converter to HDMI 1 on the TV. The TV is set to the correct HDMI input, and I've tested multiple AV cables, HDMI cables, and converters. I'm using ONN cables and converters, and the HDMI cable works with another device. The TV itself seems fine, and the VHS/DVD player is believed to be working, but I'm getting no picture or sound. Could the converter need a separate power source, or is there another connection or setting I'm missing?

Some of these converters need USB power in addition to the AV and HDMI cables. Try powering it from a wall charger or another reliable USB power adapter rather than the TV’s USB port, since the TV may not provide enough power. Also make sure the red, white, and yellow plugs are connected to the matching input colors on the converter.
With an HDMI connection, the TV doesn’t use a traditional channel. Make sure it’s set specifically to the HDMI input where the converter is connected, such as HDMI 1. Also confirm that the converter is set to the correct direction—AV to HDMI, not HDMI to AV.
I meant the correct HDMI input, but I’ll double-check that the converter is definitely set for AV-to-HDMI.
I had tried powering it from the TV before, so I’ll test it with a wall adapter instead. If that still doesn’t work, I’ll recheck the converter direction and all of the color-coded connections.
