The freezer started making popping sounds, and when I opened it I noticed that the back interior wall was bulging significantly. Pushing on a shelf also produces a grinding sound that seems to come from the fan area. Could this be dangerous, and is the freezer at risk of failing or exploding?

This is probably a large buildup of ice behind the interior panel, often caused by a failed defrost system, blocked drain, or evaporator fan problem. Make sure the freezer vents are not blocked. After unplugging it, let it thaw completely with the doors open and towels underneath. Don’t force the panel off or poke at the ice, since the cooling lines may be hidden behind it.
If the fan is grinding, it may be hitting ice or the fan motor may be failing. A complete manual defrost can sometimes restore normal operation temporarily, but if the wall bulges again, the freezer stops cooling, or the fan remains noisy, it needs appliance service. Avoid using improvised heaters or leaving hair dryers unattended around melting water.
Unplug the refrigerator immediately and keep it unplugged until it has been inspected. The noise and bulging are unlikely to mean it will explode, but continuing to run it could damage the fan, wiring, or other components. Move the food to coolers with ice if necessary.
