Why Does My Monitor Look Bad After Upgrading?

I've recently upgraded to a 1440p 144Hz monitor from my previous setup, which had a Radeon 5700 XT and Ryzen 3700X combo running at 1080p 60fps. While that setup worked flawlessly, switching to the new monitor has caused my PC to struggle more than expected, with framerates dropping below 60fps unless I use Super Resolution or Upscaling. Unfortunately, these methods look terrible in certain games, like Helldivers. Not only that, but back at 1080p 60fps, the visuals appear choppy and blurry compared to what I experienced before. I'm really confused why my monitor seems to make everything look worse, since I thought it would just make things sharper and smoother like my old one.

It sounds like you're running into the limits of your GPU. The RX 5700 XT is primarily designed for 1080p gaming, so it will struggle at higher resolutions like 1440p. Plus, your eyes have likely adjusted to the higher refresh rate of your new monitor, making 60Hz feel choppy by comparison. If you want to maintain good performance at 1440p, you should consider upgrading your graphics card to something more powerful, like the RTX 4070 Super. Alternatively, using upscaling might help, but it often comes with a visual sacrifice.

Yeah, it's all about how resolutions work. When you try to fit 1080p content on a 1440p monitor, it's stretched out, which makes it look worse. Each pixel gets magnified to fill more space, resulting in a blurry image. That's why upscaling can sometimes help, but it's not perfect.

Exactly, that's what virtual super resolution aims to do, but it's not a cure-all! It can help improve things a bit, but don’t expect miracles.
