I'm looking for a combined KVM and docking solution for a workspace with several machines—possibly three computers total, or two laptops plus two desktops depending on the final setup. AV Access and TESmart seem to be common choices, but I'd appreciate real-world experience with those or other brands. Is using one device for both docking and KVM switching reliable, especially when a machine is having boot or hardware problems and needs to be accessed directly? The workspace is tight, so reducing cable clutter would be helpful. I'm also interested in things to watch for, such as USB-C charging, display compatibility, USB bandwidth, EDID behavior, and switching reliability.

I’ve had good results using a small KVM setup alongside a PiKVM. The physical switch handles several machines, while the PiKVM provides browser-based remote access when I need to manage a system from elsewhere. It’s more equipment than an all-in-one dock, but it has been useful for troubleshooting and avoids depending on the operating system.
For machines that may not boot, I’d use a physical KVM rather than relying only on a software solution. Software options are convenient when the operating systems are running, but they cannot help much with BIOS screens, failed boots, or early hardware troubleshooting. A hardware KVM gives you access exactly when the system is having problems.
Before choosing a model, list each computer’s exact video outputs, the number and type of monitors, required resolution and refresh rate, USB peripherals, and laptop charging requirements. A dock that works with two ordinary laptops may not support two desktops or four systems at the same time. Some ultrawide monitors also have built-in input switching and docking features, which can reduce the amount of separate hardware needed.
A combined KVM and dock can work well, but check the specifications carefully. Make sure it supports the right USB-C charging levels, display resolutions and refresh rates, USB bandwidth, and the number of computers you actually need. EDID handling is especially important because poor switching can make monitors disappear or force windows to rearrange. Three or four systems will limit the available models, so confirm compatibility with every laptop and desktop before buying.
There are premium KVMs with excellent switching, USB support, and EDID features, though they can be expensive. Cheaper generic units can also work surprisingly well for basic setups, but reliability varies, especially with high-resolution displays, USB peripherals, and laptops that need power delivery. I’d prioritize documented compatibility and return support over simply choosing the lowest price.

That’s the main reason I’m leaning toward physical hardware. The system may need attention precisely when software switching or remote desktop is unavailable.
