I'm looking for advice on upgrading my current PC without replacing parts that are still perfectly usable. The system has a Ryzen 7 3700X, Radeon RX 580, MSI A520M-A PRO motherboard, 32GB of single-stick Kingston HyperX DDR4-2666 memory, a 500GB Kingston NVMe SSD, a 128GB SATA SSD, and a 500GB hard drive. I use Windows 11 Pro and currently run two Dell UltraSharp U2412M monitors.
My main uses are everyday work, programming, multitasking, and some gaming. The RX 580 is clearly the weakest component, so I'm considering a GPU upgrade and would like to know what would be a sensible match for the Ryzen 7 3700X, especially for 1440p gaming. I'm also wondering whether the basic motherboard needs replacing, whether moving to 2×16GB DDR4-3200 dual-channel memory would make a noticeable difference, and whether a faster NVMe drive would improve everyday performance or mainly benchmarks and large file transfers.
I'm also considering replacing or supplementing one monitor with a 27-inch 1440p display or a 4K monitor. For programming and multitasking, would 27-inch 4K or 32-inch 4K be more comfortable, and what scaling is typically needed? What upgrade order would provide the biggest improvement for the money?

The best order depends on whether gaming or productivity matters more. For gaming, I’d start with the GPU, then consider the monitor, memory, and CPU. A current midrange card should pair reasonably well with the 3700X, although very high frame rates at 1080p may become CPU-limited. For productivity, I’d put the CPU and monitor first, followed by the GPU and RAM.
A 4K monitor can be excellent for programming because text is sharper and there is more desktop space. At 27 inches, Windows scaling around 125–150% is common, which improves readability but reduces some of the effective workspace. A 32-inch 4K monitor is generally more comfortable at normal desk distance and often works well at 100–125% scaling, making it a better fit if you want several windows visible at once. An IPS panel is a good choice for long productivity sessions and consistent viewing angles. Keep the existing Dell displays as secondary monitors if their image quality and layout still work for you.
I wouldn’t replace the motherboard just for being basic, and I’d only replace the SSD for more capacity. A 5800X3D-class processor can be a strong gaming upgrade on this platform if you can find one at a reasonable price, while a 5900X or 5950X is more useful for heavily threaded workloads.
The motherboard is fine unless you specifically need a missing port, feature, or expansion option, so I’d keep it. The same applies to the NVMe SSD: a newer drive may look much faster in benchmarks, but normal booting, programming, and application use probably won’t feel dramatically different. Upgrade storage only when you need more capacity.
The single 32GB stick is holding back memory bandwidth because the system is running in single-channel mode. Two 16GB DDR4-3200 sticks would improve performance, particularly in games and other memory-sensitive workloads, but the gain may not justify buying expensive RAM right now if the current kit is otherwise adequate.
For gaming, prioritize the GPU. A modern midrange card with 16GB of VRAM would be a sensible 1440p target, provided the power supply is suitable. Check the PSU model and wattage before buying, since that information is missing. If you do heavier programming work such as compiling large projects, running virtual machines, or processing datasets, a Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X could provide a much bigger productivity improvement than a GPU upgrade.
That makes sense. I’m leaning toward improving productivity first, so the monitor and possibly a stronger CPU may come before the graphics card. I’ll also check the PSU before choosing a GPU.

I’m mainly considering 4K for programming, browsing, and multitasking with many windows open. I’m currently leaning toward 32-inch 4K because I’m concerned that 27-inch 4K would require too much scaling. Keeping the two existing Dell monitors alongside it sounds practical.
