Is a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with dual-channel DDR4 better than a Ryzen 5 7500X3D with single-channel DDR5 for 1440p gaming?

I'm upgrading to a 1440p gaming system with an RX 9070 XT and want to keep the platform unchanged until around 2030–2032. I'm comparing two options: a $300 AM4 setup with a new Ryzen 7 5800X3D, an ASRock B450M Steel Legend, and 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 in dual channel; or a $380 AM5 bundle with a new Ryzen 5 7500X3D, an ASRock B850M motherboard, and 16GB (1x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 in single channel. Which option is likely to provide better overall gaming performance and stability at 1440p over the long term: the older eight-core AM4 system with proper dual-channel memory, or the newer six-core AM5 system with an upgrade path but only one DDR5 module?

There’s no inherent stability problem with running one DDR5 stick, and four modules are not the same thing as quad-channel memory. The main drawback is performance, not that the system will randomly fail to work. Also, the motherboard brand alone isn’t a reason to reject a build; check the specific board’s BIOS support, power delivery, memory compatibility, and update history instead. For a system intended to last until 2030 or later, AM5 plus a second matching DDR5 module is the more balanced choice.

I’d lean toward the AM5 option if the budget allows it. The 7500X3D should offer comparable or better gaming performance, and having a newer socket gives you the possibility of upgrading the CPU later without replacing the motherboard and memory. A single DDR5 module will reduce memory bandwidth compared with dual-channel RAM, but at 1440p the RX 9070 XT will often be the limiting factor, so the gaming impact may be fairly small in many titles. I would still add a matching second 16GB stick as soon as possible, since 32GB of dual-channel memory is a much better long-term target.

The single-stick setup shouldn’t be treated as equivalent to dual-channel memory. DDR5 modules have internal subchannels, but one DIMM still does not provide the same bandwidth as two modules operating across the motherboard’s memory channels. It can work normally, but adding a second matching stick would be the sensible plan.

The 5800X3D is still a strong gaming CPU, and the AM4 option has the advantage of proper dual-channel memory immediately. If the choice is strictly between 16GB dual-channel DDR4 and 16GB single-channel DDR5, the 5800X3D system could deliver smoother results in games that are sensitive to memory bandwidth or background tasks. However, AM4 has effectively reached its upgrade limit, and 16GB may become restrictive over such a long ownership period. I’d choose it mainly if you can’t afford a second DDR5 module for the AM5 build.
