I'm planning to build or buy a mini PC mainly for demanding batch-processing work: compressing and decompressing thousands of files, plus converting tens of thousands of videos from x264 to x265. I don't need the newest flagship processor—I'm looking for older CPUs that still deliver excellent performance and can be found cheaply on the used market, ideally from decommissioned HP, Dell, or similar workstations. I'll probably pair the system with an Intel or Nvidia GPU to help with video encoding, so integrated graphics and specific media-encoding features aren't important. An Apple Mac mini with an M4 chip is another surprisingly affordable option for automated media-processing jobs. The base model can deliver very good performance for its price and low power consumption, and some users run large batches of video conversions on multiple inexpensive units. It’s less flexible than a conventional workstation, though, so check that your tools and workflow support macOS.
For outright performance per dollar, the Intel 270K is a strong choice if you can find one at a reasonable price. It can significantly outperform many older workstation and server CPUs from the Broadwell, Skylake, and Cascade Lake era. For workloads running continuously across tens of thousands of files, newer hardware can also make sense because its better performance per watt may offset the purchase price over time. You can further improve efficiency by limiting the highest boost frequencies.
Older X99 platforms are still worth considering because the processors are inexpensive and plentiful. A Xeon E5-2699 v4 gives you 22 cores and 44 threads, lots of cache, and quad-channel DDR4 memory support, often for roughly the cost of a budget CPU. Lower-core-count Xeons can be even cheaper if your software scales well but you don’t need maximum throughput.
