I've ordered a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and intentionally decided to stay on AM4 instead of moving to AM5, since replacing the whole platform is too expensive right now. My current system has a Ryzen 5 1600, GTX 1660 Super, 16GB of DDR4 running at 2133MHz, a Cooler Master 500W Bronze PSU, and a damaged ASUS PRIME A320M-K motherboard that loses display and USB connectivity whenever the desk is bumped. I'll need a replacement motherboard, preferably a reasonably priced B550 model with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, plus a new CPU cooler because I'm still using the Ryzen 5 1600's stock cooler. I'm considering a Thermalright Burst Assassin 120 EVO Dark and want to know whether it is sufficient for the 5800X3D. I'd also like to know how much my slow memory will limit performance, whether I can postpone upgrading to 32GB of 3600MHz DDR4, whether the 500W PSU is safe with the 5800X3D and GTX 1660 Super, and what GPU upgrade would make sense later for a balanced system.

Keep in mind that the GTX 1660 Super will be the main performance limit in most games, so the difference between the 5800X3D and a cheaper AM4 gaming CPU may not be very noticeable right away. Depending on local prices, putting some of the budget toward a used midrange GPU could produce a much larger improvement than buying the fastest AM4 processor.
Since you’re replacing the motherboard and may also replace the RAM, it’s worth pricing out AM5 before committing to the 5800X3D. The 5800X3D makes the most sense as a drop-in upgrade when you already have a good AM4 board and memory. If an affordable AM5 bundle with a Ryzen 5-class CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 is available, it could offer a newer upgrade path for a similar total cost.
Nearly any decent B550 board should handle the 5800X3D without trouble, since the chip’s power draw is fairly modest. The 500W PSU should also be fine with a GTX 1660 Super; the combined CPU and GPU load should remain well below 300W, assuming the PSU is in good condition. Your memory is slow, but the 5800X3D’s large cache reduces the impact compared with a regular processor. You can try enabling an overclock or memory profile if the modules support it, though moving to faster 3200–3600MHz RAM would still provide some gains. For cooling, a dual-tower air cooler is preferable and should be chosen based on your case’s clearance.

It’s also worth looking into a mild undervolt for the 5800X3D. That can noticeably reduce temperatures and power use, and may even improve sustained performance without sacrificing much speed.
