How should I reformat and organize my old games and storage partitions on CachyOS?

I recently switched my 1 TB HDD from Windows to CachyOS. It currently has three partitions: a 200 GB system partition and two older NTFS partitions—one for downloads, movies, and pictures, and another for installed games. Since I plan to stay with CachyOS, I want to erase and reuse the two NTFS partitions. Should I format them as Btrfs because my system uses Btrfs and Limine, or would another filesystem be better? I'd also like them to appear in Dolphin's Places sidebar under names such as "Games" and "Storage." Can this safely be done with GParted, and what precautions or steps should I follow?

A simple approach is to format the games partition as Ext4 and use either Ext4 or Btrfs for the general storage partition. The filesystem choice doesn’t control whether Dolphin shows the partition in Places—the mount location and a file-manager shortcut do. GParted can handle the partition changes, but it won’t automatically set up all your preferred mount points, so you may need to finish that configuration afterward.

You can format or delete the old partitions in GParted, provided you’ve backed up anything important and confirmed you’re selecting the correct disks. Make sure the partitions aren’t mounted before changing them. After formatting, give each filesystem a label such as “Games” or “Storage,” then mount them wherever you like. You can configure persistent mounts through `/etc/fstab`; once mounted, Dolphin should display them, and you can also add shortcuts to the Places sidebar.

Thanks, that mounting and shortcut setup is what I was looking for. I’ll back everything up and double-check the partition names before using GParted.

They don’t need to use Btrfs just because your system partition does. Ext4 is a straightforward choice, especially for a games partition. If you use Btrfs for games or virtual machines, disabling copy-on-write is often recommended because those workloads can suffer from unnecessary CoW overhead. Btrfs can still be useful for general data storage, though.
