I'm putting together a new PC and I'm deciding between the Ryzen 5 5600 for $125 and the Ryzen 7 5700X for $165. I've heard their gaming performance is very similar, but the price gap is fairly small. I probably won't stream or do heavy editing, although I often keep a lot of browser tabs and other applications open. Would the extra cores and threads on the 5700X be worthwhile, or would it make more sense to save the $40?

If you’re mainly gaming, I’d lean toward the Ryzen 5 5600 and put the $40 toward a better graphics card, more storage, or another part that directly improves the build. Having lots of browser tabs open usually doesn’t require eight CPU cores, especially if you have enough RAM. The 5700X is better for sustained productivity work, but it won’t transform everyday gaming performance.
An X3D processor could be worth investigating if you can find one at a similar price. Chips such as the Ryzen 5 5600X3D or 5500X3D can deliver noticeably better gaming performance because of their larger cache, though availability and the total cost—including a suitable cooler—matter. Between the two CPUs listed, both are good, but the 5600 offers better value for a gaming-focused system.
The 5700X mainly adds two cores and four threads, along with somewhat higher clock speeds. In most games, the difference is small, so the Ryzen 5 5600 is already a strong choice if gaming is the priority. The extra cores become more useful for video editing, 3D work, heavy multitasking, or other productivity workloads, and may help the system age a little better. For only $40 more, I’d choose the 5700X if the rest of the build comfortably fits the budget.
