PC Won’t POST After Bent USB Header Pins—Repair or Upgrade?

I have an ASUS ROG Maximus Hero WiFi 6 system with an i9-10900K and RTX 3080 that was working normally until a USB port on the case panel stopped working. Unfortunately, I left the PC powered on while unplugging the internal USB header and bent the pins. I then tried to straighten them while the system was still on, so I may have shorted the header.

The computer powers on and the lights and fans work, but it will not POST. The motherboard shows a red warning light and Q-code 00. I disconnected the USB connections and reseated the GPU, but that did not help. I'm comfortable working inside a PC, though I'm not very confident choosing compatible replacement components.

I'm trying to figure out whether the motherboard is the only damaged part, or whether I should replace the PSU or build a new system. The PC is from around 2020, and I use it for 4K gaming on an LG 5K2K display, occasional heavy engineering workloads, and six hard drives containing personal and work data. I don't need the absolute highest competitive gaming performance, but I do want excellent visuals and a system that can last several years.

My budget in the United States is roughly $3,000–$4,000. Should I troubleshoot the existing system and look for a used LGA1200 motherboard, or would a new build or prebuilt make more sense?

If the PSU and other components test good, a used LGA1200 board is the cheapest way to get the current system running again. Just be careful with used listings and avoid assuming the motherboard is bad without testing the PSU first. If you decide to upgrade, your budget supports a very strong new build with a modern high-core-count CPU, 64 GB of RAM if your engineering work benefits from it, and a high-end graphics card. You can reuse the existing drives if they’re healthy, but make sure anything important is backed up before moving them between systems.

A new build around $2,900–$3,500 would fit your use case well: a current high-end CPU, a powerful GPU suitable for 4K, and 32–64 GB of memory. For engineering workloads, prioritize CPU cores and RAM capacity rather than spending every dollar on the graphics card. Since the failure may be limited to the motherboard, though, I’d troubleshoot the existing machine first and only upgrade after confirming which parts survived.

Before buying a motherboard, test the PSU if you can. A short between USB power and ground can damage the board, trigger PSU protection, or occasionally damage the PSU itself. Fans and lighting turning on only prove that some power is present; they don’t confirm that the PSU is healthy or that the board can initialize the CPU. Try disconnecting the PSU from wall power completely for a few minutes, then test with the minimum hardware installed: CPU, one RAM stick, GPU if required, and no USB headers or drives. If possible, test with a known-good PSU.

There’s still a reasonable chance only the motherboard was damaged. With the power disconnected, inspect the USB header carefully and make sure no pins are touching or debris is lodged inside. You can gently realign a pin with a fine tool, but I would not reconnect or use that damaged USB port afterward. Compressed air may help remove loose conductive debris. Clear CMOS and try a bare-minimum boot after leaving the PSU unplugged for a few minutes. Q-code 00 usually points toward a CPU, motherboard, power, or initialization problem, so it isn’t proof that the entire system is dead.

I should clarify that I tried straightening the pins while the PC was still powered, so I probably shorted the header when I did it. I’ll leave the PSU disconnected and test with the USB header completely removed.
