Should I choose 32GB of DDR4 or 16GB of DDR5 for my first gaming PC?

I'm building my first PC and found two deals: 32GB of DDR4 for $70, or 16GB of DDR5 for $160. I'm planning to game at 1440p on high settings, mostly in demanding titles such as Silent Hill 2 Remake, The Last of Us, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Requiem, and eventually GTA 6. I don't expect to upgrade the CPU or rebuild the system for at least four years, so I want to make the better long-term choice. I understand that the DDR4 option would require a compatible older platform, while DDR5 would pair with a newer platform. Is 16GB of DDR5 enough for these games, or would 32GB of DDR4 provide a better experience?

First make sure the memory matches the motherboard and CPU platform. DDR4 and DDR5 aren’t interchangeable, so this isn’t just a choice between two RAM kits. If you’re building from scratch, the newer DDR5 platform generally gives you a better upgrade path. Sixteen gigabytes is still usable for gaming, but 32GB is much more comfortable for modern AAA games, Discord, browsers, and other background programs. If you choose DDR5, adding another matching 16GB kit later is a reasonable plan.

I’d avoid planning around four memory sticks later. Two matched sticks are usually easier to run reliably, so upgrading with another identical pair isn’t always guaranteed to work at the advertised speed.

The rest of the build matters, especially the graphics card. With a midrange GPU, 16GB can be acceptable at 1440p because the graphics card’s VRAM handles much of the game data. With a faster GPU and demanding ray-traced games, 16GB of system memory becomes less comfortable. If you choose the DDR5 system, make sure the kit uses two sticks rather than one, and plan to move to 32GB later. If the DDR4 option is part of a significantly cheaper complete build, 32GB may be worthwhile, but don’t choose an outdated platform solely for the extra memory.

For a new build, I’d lean toward DDR5 rather than starting on an older platform just to get 32GB immediately. Sixteen gigabytes should run most games if you keep background applications under control, but memory usage can get very high in newer releases. Save for a second matching 16GB stick as soon as you can, or wait until you can afford a 32GB DDR5 kit. That gives you the newer platform without being stuck at 16GB long-term.

Sixteen gigabytes is fine for gaming by itself, but having lots of browser tabs, video, or voice chat open can cause stuttering or force the system to use the page file. Thirty-two gigabytes gives you much more breathing room.

Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 is perfectly usable, but it usually makes more sense when upgrading an existing compatible system. For a brand-new build that you want to keep for four years, the newer DDR5 platform is the safer foundation. Sixteen gigabytes won’t automatically prevent you from playing these games, but 32GB is increasingly the comfortable target, so budget for that upgrade rather than treating 16GB as the final configuration.
