Are Ryzen 9000 owners running EXPO, and what memory settings are stable?

For those using Ryzen 9000-series processors, are you running EXPO? If so, what memory speed and kit are you using? I'm curious how common it is and whether people are seeing stability problems. I'm currently RMAing a Ryzen 5 9600X because it hangs on the VGA LED during cold boots and on the CPU LED when waking from sleep. Reboots are the only reliable recovery. I suspect the memory controller may be involved, possibly because of EXPO. Does enabling EXPO create any warranty concerns? I told AMD that I disabled EXPO during troubleshooting, and the RMA was still accepted.

I’m running 6000 MT/s CL30 with a G.Skill Trident kit, and it has been fine. Plenty of Ryzen 9000 systems use 6000-speed memory successfully, but that doesn’t mean every CPU’s memory controller or motherboard will handle the same settings. A weaker chip or finicky board can still produce cold-boot, sleep, or random-crash problems.

Some people avoid applying EXPO through Ryzen Master and instead enable the memory profile directly in the motherboard firmware. You can also try setting the RAM to 6000 MT/s manually and adjusting the relevant power or memory settings, although that may not solve a marginal memory controller. The symptoms you describe could still be caused by firmware, motherboard training, RAM, or the CPU itself rather than EXPO alone.

Sleep failures are especially frustrating because a system can appear stable during normal use but still fail when resuming. I’d test with EXPO disabled, update the BIOS, and check whether the issue changes with one DIMM or a lower memory speed before concluding that the CPU is responsible.

I have 6000 MT/s running on both of my systems. EXPO is usually the easiest way to apply the kit’s advertised speed and timings, but it isn’t a universal guarantee. If stability is questionable, try running at the motherboard’s automatic settings or manually lower the memory speed, then test cold boots and sleep separately.

The processor’s official memory rating is lower than 6000 MT/s, so 6000 MT/s can technically count as memory-controller overclocking. However, EXPO is a common expected use case for these platforms. It may work perfectly on one CPU and fail on another because of silicon variation, so a stable EXPO profile is never guaranteed.

EXPO and XMP technically involve running memory outside the processor’s official base specification, so they aren’t guaranteed on every CPU and motherboard combination. In practice, warranty claims generally haven’t been rejected just because a memory profile was enabled, and AMD accepting the RMA is a good sign. The exact cause of a failure would also be difficult to determine from the memory profile alone.
