Does Downloading a Free iPad App Require a Password or Payment?

I tried to install spacedesk on my dad's iPad so it could work as a second monitor for a Windows laptop. We're more familiar with Android, so the Apple App Store process was confusing. It asked for a password related to purchases or payment information, then asked whether the password should be required every time or after a certain period. I decided not to continue, but the app downloaded anyway. I later deleted it after finding another solution. Since spacedesk is supposed to be free, did entering the password authorize a charge or purchase? How can I check whether anything was billed?

The App Store can ask for your Apple ID password even when you’re downloading a free app. That password verifies your account and doesn’t automatically mean you paid for anything. The setting about requiring it every time or after a time interval controls how often authentication is needed, partly to prevent accidental or unauthorized paid downloads.

So if the app was free and I only entered the password to download it, that means I didn’t accidentally buy anything, right?
