I currently have an RTX 4060 Ti with 8GB of VRAM and am considering upgrading to a newer NVIDIA 50-series card or an AMD RX 9000-series card. I want a clearly noticeable gaming performance boost, but I'm not looking to spend 5090-level money. My target resolution and frame rate may affect the choice, so I'm wondering which cards offer the best balance of performance, VRAM, and value.

I’d recommend the RX 9070. I went from a 4060 to one and the improvement has been very noticeable. AMD’s current cards generally offer stronger gaming performance for the money, while NVIDIA’s pricing is harder to justify unless you specifically need features such as CUDA, NVENC, ray tracing, or DLSS.
NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti are alternatives, but the 5070 only has 12GB of VRAM and the 5070 Ti costs considerably more. AMD’s RX 9000 cards are probably the better value if gaming performance is your main priority. The 8GB on your current card is still fine for many 1080p games, but limited VRAM could become a bigger issue over time.
The RX 9060 XT 16GB is more of a budget option, but it may not be a big enough jump from a 4060 Ti to justify replacing your card. A 9070 GRE is roughly the kind of step up I’d consider the minimum for a worthwhile 1440p upgrade, while the regular 9070 or 9070 XT would provide a more substantial improvement.
The best choice depends heavily on your resolution. At 1080p, the 4060 Ti is still reasonably capable, so an RX 9070 GRE would make more sense than a smaller upgrade. For 1440p, I’d look at the RX 9070 or 9070 XT. Also make sure your CPU and power supply can handle the new card.
