What’s the safest way to protect an RTX 4090 from 12VHPWR connector failures?

I bought an MSI RTX 4090 Suprim in December 2022, and its three-year manufacturer warranty has expired. Since I may keep the card for a while and the 12VHPWR connector has had a history of overheating and melting, I'm considering extra protection.

The options I'm comparing are the Ampinel Adapter, which appears to offer load balancing but has no warranty and costs about $220 CAD; the WireView Pro II, which monitors the connection and includes a two-year warranty covering the adapter and related GPU damage for around $167 CAD; and an MSI power supply with Safeguard+, such as the MPG Ai1300TS. The MSI PSU is considerably more expensive at roughly $552 CAD, but it includes an integrated protection system and provides more capacity for a future upgrade.

I'd prefer not to replace my power supply unless it offers a meaningful safety advantage. What are people currently using to reduce the risk of a 12VHPWR failure? Is one of these options clearly better, or would it be smarter to wait for newer solutions?

The Ampinel may be technically sophisticated, but the lack of a warranty is a significant drawback when the whole purpose is protecting an expensive card. Unless its load balancing has been independently shown to provide a meaningful improvement over a properly installed native cable, I’d favor the WireView Pro II or simply upgrading to a suitable ATX 3.1 PSU.

The WireView Pro II is probably the most practical choice of the three. It monitors the connection and comes with a warranty, so you get some protection without replacing an otherwise suitable power supply. Just make sure the connector is fully seated and the cable has no sharp bend near the GPU.

If you’re already planning to replace the PSU, an integrated protection system is appealing, but buying a much more expensive unit solely for this feature seems hard to justify. A high-quality native cable, careful installation, and modest undervolting should reduce the risk substantially. Avoid third-party adapters unless you specifically need their monitoring or load-balancing features.

A newer ATX 3.1 power supply with a native 12V-2x6 cable is a cleaner solution than adding another adapter or connector in series. Some thermal-protection cables are designed to disconnect if the cable gets too hot, which can prevent damage, although compatibility depends on the PSU’s cable type and the sensor may not sit directly at the hottest point.

That approach is worth considering, but compatibility is the main issue for me. My current PSU uses Corsair Type 4 cables, and the compatible thermal-protection cable doesn’t appear to be available yet. I’m also unsure whether measuring cable temperature away from the connector is as effective as the monitoring offered by the WireView or Ampinel.
