Is the Ryzen 5 5600X a Good Match for the Radeon RX 9070 GRE at 1440p?

If you want to extend the life of your current AM4 system, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D or similar X3D chip could help in CPU-heavy games. However, the improvement in Starfield still won’t guarantee 120 FPS, and moving to a newer platform would require a new motherboard and DDR5 memory. I’d buy the 9070 GRE now and consider a CPU upgrade later only if benchmarks show the 5600X is holding you back.

That pairing should be fine for 1440p. There may be a CPU bottleneck in some games, but it usually won’t be a major issue at that resolution because the GPU is doing more of the work. The 5600X should deliver well over 60 FPS in most single-player games and considerably more in competitive titles, so it mainly depends on whether it can reach your target in the specific games you play.

I’ve used a 5600X with a more powerful graphics card at 1440p and it worked very well. The CPU becomes much more noticeable at 1080p with low settings, where the graphics card can render frames faster than the processor can prepare them. At 1440p, especially with higher settings or upscaling, the combination makes much more sense.

Starfield is the main exception. It can be heavily CPU-limited, and a 5600X may prevent the 9070 GRE from reaching very high frame rates in busy areas. Cyberpunk should generally be more GPU-limited at 1440p, where the GRE could be around the 80–90 FPS range depending on settings, while the 9060 XT would be slower. I wouldn’t replace the whole platform just for this, though—80 or 90 FPS is still perfectly playable.

The 9070 GRE is the better choice if the price difference is reasonable. At 1440p, it should provide a noticeable performance advantage over the 9060 XT, especially in Cyberpunk 2077. You may not hold 120 FPS everywhere with maximum settings, but the extra GPU performance gives you more headroom than stepping down to the 9060 XT.
