This was my first PC build, and it initially powered on and reached the BIOS normally. While troubleshooting the case-fan RGB cables, I removed the GPU to access the CPU cooler clips. I used a long flathead screwdriver to release the PCIe latch, but the screwdriver slipped and struck the motherboard near the slot. The latch broke, and the system has not powered on since.
The PSU cable was disconnected afterward, although the PSU switch was left on. I reseated the GPU, reconnected the fan cables, cleared the CMOS, and also tested the motherboard outside the case with only the 24-pin power, CPU power, and fans connected. Nothing happens when I press the power button. The GPU's red LEDs briefly illuminate even before its PCIe power cables are connected, which makes the situation confusing. Could the motherboard have been damaged, and what should I check before replacing parts?

The motherboard may have damaged traces or a tiny surface-mounted component near the PCIe slot, even if the damage is difficult to see without magnification. A screwdriver is risky in that area; a nonconductive tool is safer for releasing the latch.
Start with basic isolation before declaring every component dead. On a nonconductive surface, connect only the 24-pin motherboard cable and the 8-pin CPU power cable, then briefly short the two power-switch pins with a screwdriver. You can also test the PSU separately using the manufacturer’s instructions or a PSU tester. Inspect the damaged area closely with a phone camera or magnifying glass for scratches, lifted traces, or crushed components.
You could also try the graphics card in another full-length PCIe slot. It may run at reduced bandwidth, but that would help determine whether only the original slot was damaged.
If the board has a broken trace, damaged component, or a short near the slot, the PSU may shut down immediately for protection. A specialist electronics repair shop may be able to repair a trace under a microscope, but visible accidental damage could also make a warranty replacement difficult. The CPU, memory, and graphics card may still be fine, so test them only after confirming the board and power supply are safe.
Make sure the red indicator is actually on the graphics card and not a motherboard diagnostic LED. If it is on the GPU, it may only indicate that the card is receiving standby power or that its external power connectors are missing. That does not prove the motherboard is functioning.

I checked the area around the broken latch, but I’m new to PC building and can’t tell whether anything looks abnormal.
