My RX 6750 XT recently died, and GPU prices have gone up, so I'm choosing a replacement. My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 memory, and a 750W Gold-rated power supply. I'm not planning to upgrade the rest of the PC until it can no longer handle 60 FPS at 1440p using FSR and medium-to-low settings.
The prices available to me are:
- RX 9070 GRE 12GB: $630
- RX 9070 16GB: $780
- RX 9070 XT 16GB: $870
- RX 9060 XT 16GB: $600
The RX 9070 models also include a free game. I mainly play at 1440p or 3440×1440 with FSR, although many games are run at 2560×1440 with black bars to improve performance. I understand the general performance order is GRE < 9070 < 9070 XT, but I want to avoid upgrading my CPU, power supply, or anything else.
Is the extra 16GB of VRAM worth paying roughly 25% more than the GRE? At what point would my Ryzen 5 5600 become a serious bottleneck: with the RX 9070 or only with the 9070 XT? I'm mainly looking for the best balance of price, performance, and longevity.

The standard RX 9070 is probably the most balanced option if you want more VRAM and performance without going all the way to the XT. It is also more efficient and less demanding than the GRE or XT in some models. However, the price gap is important: at only $90 more, the XT may be worth choosing for an ultrawide display.
At these prices, I’d narrow it down to the RX 9070 GRE or RX 9070 XT. Their performance-per-dollar is fairly similar, but they suit different priorities. The GRE is the better immediate value, while the XT is the stronger long-term option for ultrawide gaming and should delay your next upgrade. Your 750W Gold power supply should generally be adequate, assuming it’s a good-quality unit.
Your Ryzen 5 5600 can limit the faster cards in high-FPS 1080p or 1440p gaming, especially in CPU-heavy games, but at 1440p ultrawide with FSR you’ll usually be GPU-limited. The 9070 XT could expose the CPU limit more often than the regular 9070, but it won’t make the card unusable. Since you specifically don’t want a platform upgrade, buy based on GPU performance and accept that some games won’t show the full XT advantage.

The XT is particularly attractive if you plan to keep the card for several years. The higher performance should matter more over time than saving the initial difference.
