I found a great deal on a powerful gaming PC, but my original order was canceled for suspected fraud. My dad reordered it successfully, and the computer has now arrived at my parents' house. I live about two hours away by Amtrak and need to bring the system home. My plan is to leave it in the original box and styrofoam, then place that inside my luggage with pillows around it for extra cushioning. Since it's an expensive system, I'm worried about damaging it while getting it on and off the train. Has anyone transported a desktop PC over a similar distance, and is this approach reasonable?

A large suitcase or the biggest permitted piece of carry-on luggage could work, but don’t rely on pillows alone for protection. The original shipping box and molded foam should be the primary protection, with the suitcase only helping keep the package stable and easier to carry. Renting a car is another option if managing the box through the station sounds difficult.
The main concern is the graphics card, since a heavy GPU can put stress on its slot during bumps and handling. If the case has internal foam supporting it, leave everything sealed. Otherwise, remove the GPU and pack it separately with plenty of padding. For a two-hour ride, transporting it carefully is basically no different from taking it in a car.
If it still has the original packaging, you’re essentially moving it the same way it was shipped. Keep the PC in that box and foam, and avoid opening it until you get home. Put the package somewhere you can keep an eye on it rather than checking it if the train’s luggage rules allow that.
If the manufacturer’s foam is still inside the case and supporting the graphics card, I’d leave the whole package unopened until you arrive. You’ll probably handle it more gently than a delivery company would.
