My GPU recently died, and I'm trying to decide on a replacement. I can find an RTX 3060 for less money, but it's an older card and I'm concerned that buying one could mean getting a unit with limited remaining lifespan. For roughly $100 more, I can buy an RTX 5050 that's much newer. Is the 5050 worth the extra cost, or would a 3060 still be the better choice?

I wouldn’t automatically rule out a used RTX 3060, especially if you’re playing demanding AAA games. Its 12GB of VRAM gives it more room for high-resolution textures than an 8GB card. For esports and lighter games, the newer RTX 5050 is likely the better fit.
Between those two, the RTX 5050 generally offers slightly better average performance and newer features such as frame generation. Its main drawback is having less VRAM on some models. For 1080p gaming without maxing out demanding AAA settings, 8GB should usually be adequate, particularly when using upscaling.
