Anyone Else Reviving Old Laptops? Tips Needed!

While cleaning out my closet, I stumbled upon an old laptop that's about five years outdated. It has an i5 processor and 8GB of RAM—definitely not cutting-edge but potentially still useful. I'm considering converting it into a dedicated Netflix machine or a backup computer rather than just tossing it into the e-waste bin. I've already thought about upgrading to a new SSD and doing a fresh OS install, but I'm curious if there are any other tricks to breathe new life into this device. Is it worth upgrading the RAM on older machines, or would that be a waste of money? Also, should I replace the battery or just accept that I'll always need it plugged in? For those who've successfully revived similar laptops, what upgrades made the biggest impact for you? I'm trying to avoid sinking too much money into something that won't be worth it in the end. Really excited about this project—maybe this is how adulthood feels now?

When it comes to upgrading, consider what you really need it for. In most cases, it's not worth a major investment unless it holds personal value for you. I used to 'fix' old Win98 machines for shops that needed them for legacy reasons. If you can get it running without going overboard financially, it could be a fun project!

I usually stick with older laptops for casual tasks. My main device is a Dell XPS from seven years ago, and I run Linux on all my laptops. The one you're looking at is likely still capable for everyday use!

My daily work laptop is from 2012, and putting an SSD in it made all the difference! It still runs well four years later. If you have an open slot for another SODIMM, see if you can add more RAM. Just remember, if it’s still usable for your needs, that’s what counts!

Your laptop should run Linux smoothly—my wife has an i5 with 8GB and loves it after I swapped her HDD for an SSD. As for RAM, I gradually upgraded mine from 2GB to 16GB, but only because I found a great deal on RAM sticks. Keep your eyes peeled for good prices!

As someone who runs a small PC repair shop, I’ve seen old laptops turned into retro gaming PCs or fixed up for resale. Depending on the specs, it's usually worth it to either upgrade or sell. Some businesses even buy older machines for parts!

Do clients often ask for gaming PCs? I'm in a similar boat as the original poster, looking for advice!
