Is ChatGPT Being Lazy or Just Running into Limits?

I've got the Plus subscription and recently had ChatGPT parse an Excel file to find job titles based on names and emails. At first, it worked fine for five entries but then it started suggesting I handle the rest myself. After a few back and forths, it just kept saying it would do better but never actually completed the task. Now, I'm getting a message that I've hit my prompt limit until May 29. Is it just stringing me along, or is there something I can do to get it to stop being lazy?

Honestly, sometimes it feels like ChatGPT just has off days. How do you normally converse with it? The tone can make a big difference too. I’ve switched up to more of a collaborative tone like 'you’re an expert at this, please help me' and it seems to respond better. Have you tried that?

Yeah, I've played around with the wording too. It's nice when it feels like a team effort rather than me just asking it to do stuff.

Switching to a more assertive approach sounds smart! I’ll give that a go next time.

Starting a new chat can also sometimes clear the context and free up memory. I tend to open a new chat for each new project to manage things better. It keeps the context cleaner and helps avoid those weird responses when the conversation gets too lengthy.

Starting fresh does work wonders. I’ve been doing that and it feels much more responsive.

Totally agree! It can get bogged down if there’s too much history—definitely worth a shot.

It sounds like your issue might stem from token limits rather than laziness. When you provide too much data at once, ChatGPT can struggle to handle it, so try breaking your prompts down. Here’s a suggestion: ask it to process five rows at a time and include specific details you want for each row, like the name, email, inferred job title, and confidence level. This approach might help keep it on track!

That’s a solid idea! I’ve had similar issues, and batching it seems to help. Just make sure it knows not to throw the task back at you.

Good point! Also, I’ve noticed it works better when I lay out clear expectations and limit the data. I’ll give this a shot next time!
