Getting Low FPS with My 3060 Ti and R7 5700X – What Should I Do?

Hey everyone! I've got a decent setup with an RTX 3060 Ti and an R7 5700X, but I'm struggling with low FPS in competitive games. For example, in CS:GO on deathmatch, I sometimes drop to 90 FPS, and my CPU usage is only around 40%, while the GPU hits about 20%. I'm playing at stretched resolution and have everything set to low. In Fortnite, I see similar issues, getting about 100 FPS but with significant drops. The only time I'm satisfied is with AAA titles where the GPU maxes out around 90% usage, aligning more with benchmark results. I occasionally do some AI work, and both the CPU and GPU run at 100% then, so I know they can handle the load. It just feels like my PC is content at the FPS it delivers, but I have a 240Hz monitor that I'd like to take advantage of! Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Don’t forget to check your BIOS version and update it if it’s outdated. Conflicting drivers and old BIOS settings can sometimes cause those performance issues, too. A friend of mine addressed similar issues just by getting a BIOS update.

Have you checked if your Nvidia drivers are up to date? Also, monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming. If they're too high, performance might throttle. From what I’ve read, your GPU should ideally stay below 80 degrees under load.

Yeah, my Nvidia drivers are up to date, and my GPU temps max out around 70-75 during gaming, but they hit 80 on AAA games. The CPU hits about 80-85, but since it’s running at low usage, it doesn’t seem to be overheating.

First off, check the per-core usage of your CPU because the overall percentage isn't very useful. The 5700X has 8 cores, so if it's showing 40% usage, that could mean four cores are maxed out, which is odd especially in a game like CS:GO. You might want to check for any malware running in the background that could be affecting performance.

Also, what's the speed of your RAM? If you’re running older 2133MHz sticks, that might be a bottleneck. Ryzen really benefits from faster RAM speeds. If possible, try enabling EXPO or XMP in your BIOS to unlock better speeds; otherwise, consider upgrading your RAM for a performance boost.

Yeah, my RAM is pretty old at 2133MHz, and I disabled XMP after getting some bluescreens. If that's the issue, I guess I should just bite the bullet and update it. I'm getting tired of these performance drops!

Lastly, ensure your display cable is connected to the GPU and not the motherboard. Sometimes a fresh Windows reinstall can also clear up compatibility issues. Make sure you're also using the latest stable drivers after that!
