Hey everyone! I'm struggling with an issue where my PC suddenly shuts down as if it's been unplugged, especially after playing games or doing heavier tasks. This has been a problem for a while, where it would occasionally black screen and the fans would go into overdrive. But now, more recently, it's shutting down completely after fairly light gaming or editing. When it happens, I can't just press the power button to turn it back on; I have to switch off the power supply directly to get it working again.
Interestingly, when it shuts down, the fans stop, but the RGB lights on my RAM stay lit, which suggests that it hasn't completely powered off. I've monitored the temps and nothing seems excessive; my CPU hovers around 60-70°C and my GPU is around 70-80°C during intense games. I recently updated my drivers, cleaned my PC, and applied new thermal pads on both the CPU and GPU, but the problem persists.
Also, I've heard some suggestions that it could be my motherboard or power supply, so I'm looking for some advice on what might be causing this issue. Here's my setup:
- Motherboard: Asus TUF B450-M
- GPU: Aourus RTX 3080 Xtreme (non-watercooled)
- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
- RAM: G.Skill F4 (4x8GB = 32GB)
- PSU: Cougar 1000W (not sure if it's gold or silver rated)
If you need more details, just let me know! Thanks for any help!

It sounds like a power supply issue to me. With the symptoms you’re describing, especially since it’s not overheating, the PSU might be failing or not providing stable power. If your PSU is old or was low quality to begin with, it would be worth testing or replacing. You could use a multimeter to check the output or borrow a PSU if you have one available to see if it resolves the problem.
Thanks for your reply! Can you share how to test a PSU with a multimeter, if I decide to go that route?
