I spoke to a seller who claimed that their 3060 Ti performs at the same level as a 3080. This sounds way off to me, but I've been out of the PC building scene for a long time—last time was when the 1080 was the latest and greatest. Is there any truth to this, or is the seller just exaggerating?

Nah, no way a 3060 Ti can do what a 3080 does, even with extreme cooling. The specs just don't stack up—3080 has way more cores. Unless that seller's comparing some freaky defect, they're not being truthful.
Honestly, that seller is probably just trying to make a sale. A 3080 is about 60% faster than a 3060 Ti. Even with serious overclocking, the 3060 Ti just can't keep up. It's pretty clear he's misleading you here.
I own both cards and can tell you there's a noticeable difference. My 3060 Ti (a high-end variant) doesn’t even come close to the performance of my 3080.
It’s possible the 3060 Ti might reach frame rates close to a 3080 with some upscaling tech, but that’s not the same as native performance. NVIDIA’s marketing can be a bit tricky these days. Honestly, best bet is to look for a used 3080; at least it has more VRAM and overall better performance.
