Hey everyone! My wife and I recently picked up a second-hand PC that we're looking to upgrade for her gaming. She's really excited about playing Red Dead Redemption 2, which I know is quite demanding. Currently, the setup includes an Asus H81M-C motherboard, a GTX 960 graphics card (which I plan to replace), 16GB of DDR3 RAM, an Intel i5 4690K processor, and a 512GB SSD.
I'm not super tech-savvy, so I have a few questions: Is it possible to run RDR2 on low settings with this setup? Can we upgrade the RAM to 32GB? Also, can we add a hard drive for more storage? I've done some research, but the technical jargon is a bit overwhelming. Appreciate any advice you can offer!

I played RDR2 on a Ryzen 3600 with a GTX 1060 and 16GB of RAM, but I had it on the lowest settings. So your setup might also work, just expect lower frames per second. You should be able to get around 30-40 FPS on low settings. Upgrading the GPU to something like a GTX 1660 could really help. Also, 32GB of RAM isn't necessary right now; 16GB is fine for most games, including RDR2.
Right! The 3600 is definitely a better CPU than the i5 4690K, so I wouldn’t expect the same performance with your setup. A good GPU upgrade is key here!
Yes, your setup is just over the minimum specs for RDR2, but it might struggle a bit. You can definitely upgrade the RAM to 32GB if you want, but keep in mind that with the i5 4690K being quite old, it might not make a huge difference. DDR3 RAM is also more expensive these days since it's outdated. Your motherboard can handle multiple storage drives, so adding a hard drive is definitely doable!
Honestly, if you got this PC cheaply, that’s great! The hardware is quite dated. The GTX 960 will struggle to keep up, and you might not hit 60FPS in RDR2, but it could run it okay at lower settings. Just make sure to check for a good used GPU upgrade, like an RTX 2070 Super, when you’re ready. Oh, and yes, your motherboard supports adding more storage. Just grab a SATA SSD for extra space!
Totally agree! I played RDR2 on my old laptop, and while it was a bit rough, it was still enjoyable. Lower settings really made a difference!
