A few months ago, I started a free trial without realizing it would renew as a $110 annual subscription. I canceled it the day before the trial ended because I thought that was early enough, but the charge still appears to have gone through. I didn't have the money to pay for it, and now my account won't let me download or update any apps, including my banking app, unless I pay the outstanding balance. I've contacted Apple Support but haven't heard back yet. Is there any way to fix this without paying for a subscription I tried to cancel? I'm still in high school and this is connected to my student email.

There generally isn’t a legitimate workaround for an unpaid App Store balance on the same account. Paying the balance should restore downloads and updates, after which you can submit a refund request. If Apple refuses the refund, using a different account may avoid the hold, but it can create problems with purchases, app data, and subscriptions, so contacting support is the better option first.
Check your subscription settings and confirm whether the subscription says canceled or ended. If it still shows as active, cancel it there. Also check your purchase history for the exact charge and contact Apple Support again through its billing and purchases help page. Deleting the app alone won’t cancel a subscription or remove an unpaid balance.
If the subscription renewed and the payment failed, Apple may place a billing hold on the account. While that balance is unpaid, downloads and updates—including free apps—can be blocked. The usual solution is to clear the balance first, then request a refund through Apple’s official refund process. Approval isn’t guaranteed, but explain that you canceled before the trial ended and didn’t intend to continue.

If the account is already locked because the payment failed, canceling the subscription may stop future renewals but usually won’t remove the existing balance. Apple Support would need to review whether the charge can be reversed.
