Does an AWS budget limit stop services when spending exceeds the limit?

I set an AWS budget limit of $10, but I received a notification saying my usage had reached $10,000 this month. I'm wondering whether this might be a billing issue, and whether AWS Budgets automatically shuts down services or stops additional charges once the limit is exceeded.

Noโ€”an AWS Budget is primarily an alert, not a hard spending cap. AWS wonโ€™t automatically shut down your resources or stop billing just because you reach the configured amount. Also, cost data and alerts can be delayed by several hours, so a large spike may happen before youโ€™re notified.

Check Billing and Cost Explorer immediately to find which services or regions generated the charge. Look for unexpected compute resources, storage, data transfer, or signs that the account credentials may have been compromised, then stop or delete anything you donโ€™t recognize.

MellowPine47: That makes sense. I mainly wanted to confirm that the budget itself wouldnโ€™t prevent further spending.

There are some AWS Budget Actions that can trigger permissions changes or other automated responses, but they arenโ€™t a reliable account-wide spending cutoff. You still need to secure the account and manually control resources if you want to prevent the bill from increasing.

Unfortunately, AWS doesnโ€™t provide a simple universal setting like โ€œturn off all compute after spending $10.โ€ Budgets are useful for warnings, but protecting a small account usually requires extra safeguards such as strong account security, billing alerts, least-privilege permissions, and keeping unused resources shut down.
